Nakum Guatemala: ancient Mayan prosperity

Nakum is, apart from the setting for one of the survivor programs, a Mayan Jungle Site and a former ceremonial center and city of the ancient Maya of Guatemala. Rediscovered in 1905 by Maurice Perigny, Nakum has had several archaeological and restorative sessions including a Guatemalan “official restoration” in 1990.

Located in the northeastern portion of the Petén Basin region, it rests in what is called the Guatemalan department of Petén. The northeastern Petén region contains significant Maya sites, Nakum being one of three sites composing the cultural and political triangle of "Yaxha-Nakum-Naranjo". Approximately 17 km to the north of Yaxha and some 20 km to the east of Tikal. Outside of Tikal its main temple, a visibly-restored feature, serves as one of the Maya civilization’s best preserved archeological artifacts.

Information on Belize - a great place for travelers

Belize is a small country and few people know about its existence. Nevertheless, Belize has everything it takes for a country to be a perfect holiday destination. With its total area of 22,966 km² (or 8,867 sq miles) and a population of little over 300,000 people, there is plenty of space left for natu

re. Another interesting thing about Belize is its various cultures.
Belize borders Mexico to its North, Guatemala to its West and the Caribbean Sea to its South and East. This demographical position blesses Belize with gorgeous beaches, many small islands called Cays, impressive scuba dive and snorkel reefs, ancient Mayan ruins, lush jungle with beautiful rivers; and even a mountain range featuring 1124 meter (or 3688 feet) as its highest point.

Belize is the only English-speaking country in Central America as the country was colonized by the British. Nevertheless, the majority of its population is of Mexican or Guatemalan descent, which is why

Spanish is widely spoken too. The second most common and perhaps Belize’s “own” language is Creole. English is often usually a second language (after Spanish or Creole). Indigenous cultures found in Belize are Maya and Garifuna. The Mayan culture is also found in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador and has a much more numerous population than the Garinagu. Nowadays Garinagu are found on the Caribbean coasts of Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
