Indoor SkydivingPosted by Alexis in Untagged |
While is extremely exciting to jump from a plane just using a parachute as means of life saver, there are some people who still love the thrill of flying through the air without the extreme danger.
Indoor skydiving or vertical wind tunneling was invented in Quebec in 1979 and it was mainly used for skydivers training. However, not many people had heard of this type of “sport” until the 2006 Torino Winter Olympics, where they built a special vertical wind tunnel called the “Wind Machine” for the closing ceremony.
Many people as said before had never seen something like it and were intrigued and fascinated with this machine where you could fly without any wires attached. What is more, this was a really big attraction for those who are afraid of heights, or afraid to go at extremely fast speeds. Inside the tunnel you can moderate speed, as well as having the safety benefits as, cushions and a safety net in case you fall.
Nowadays, indoor skydiving is very popular as it targets all ages, and the flying centers are all over the world, being the most popular Canada, USA, Holland, Germany and UK.

Too bad: Mayan calendar predictions revised, 2012 becomes 2220Posted by Travel Adventures in Untagged |
This is the translation of an excerpt of a publication in Natuurwetenschap & Techniek (Science & Technology), a Dutch scientific magazine. The excerpt was written by Maarten Keulemans. The publication was made in the 11th edition of 2009.
The movie 2012, which premieres this month, shows the viewer cities and continents being whiped from the face of the earth when the world comes to an end. However, research has just shown that the 'end of time' of the 21st of December 2012 has been miscalculated by two centuries.

Elephant swimming, great underwater picturePosted by MacTrip in Untagged |
Have a look at this lovely picture from the National Geographic site. It's actually quite rare to see an elephant swimming ;)
Only a few weeks remain in National Geographic Magazine's International Photo Contest. Here's a standout from this week's batch of entries, taken by Cesare Naldi.
Nazroo, a mahout (elephant driver), poses for a portrait while taking his elephant, Rajan, out for a swim in front of Radha Nagar Beach in Havelock, Andaman Islands. Rajan is one of the few elephants in Havelock that can swim, so when he is not dragging timber in the forest he is used as a tourist attraction. The relationship between the mahout and his elephant usually lasts for their entire lives, creating an extremely strong tie between the animal and the human being.
For more images, visit the weekly galleries on National Geographic Magazine's site. The International Photo Contest ends October 31st, so submit your favorite images in the People, Places, and Nature categories now.
