Mexico is popular for its wide-ranging places of tourist attractions and wild life. On a tour of Mexico, be ready to see some of worlds most famous animals and views. In this article, I will show you the very best Mexico has to offer; reviewing various wildlife sanctuaries and official parks that are open to visitors!
There are beautiful landscapes, hills, rivers and forests magnifying the glory of nature and wild life. The vast variation in climate has created opportunitiesfor a wide range of flora and fauna. The forests grow hardwoods like Ebony, Mahogany, Walnut and Rosewood besides Oak, Fir, Pine and the Cacao.
Mexico is among the most biologically different countries with about one tenth of the species on the land. Many tour operators offer wildlife and bird watching tours. Mexican wildlife has more than thirty thousand varieties of plants, which include magnolia, frangipani, orchids and bougainvillea.
The marine life has a wide variety. Mackerel, sardine, whales, swordfish, barracuda, sharks and turtles live in adjoining sea. Thousands of gray whales migrate in winter to Mexico's Baja Peninsula from Bering Sea.
There are many species of animals like wolves, bears, lynx, jaguars, ocelots, pumas, tapirs, lizards, crocodiles, monkeys, snakes, axolotls and iguanas that can be spotted in the Jungles of Mexico and around Mayan Ruins.
Mexican wildlife includes a large number of different species of birds such as parrots, macaws, flamingo’s toucans, and humming birds.
Wildlife Sanctuaries
There are many wildlife sanctuaries where you can find rare species of animals and birds.
- Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary is one of thes em and known for the lagoons, savannas, log wood thickets, and many wonderful species of birds such as double crested Cormorants, Herons, Egrets, ducks, etc. Jabir Stork the largest bird of America and Peregrine, which is the fastest falcon in the world, can be seen here. Besides, you can see Snail Kites, Black-bellied, Kingfishers and Whistling ducks. There are water species including crocodiles, turtles and iguanas found on the riverbanks.
- Mexico Rocks is also popular for many species of Mexico wildlife. Maybel is closest to the ruins inside the jungle. It is full of several types of scorpions, snakes, ants, Beatles, bats, centipedes, wailing monkeys, Toucans, Jaguars and parrots and other tropical birds.
- Isla Isabella Island is midway between Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta. It comprises both fish and fowl. It is a Mexico wildlife preserve guarding several species of birds mainly frigates as well as blue-footed boobies.
- Cuatro Cienegas Valley is a home for over hundred endemic animals and many plant species. The Pozas Azules desert springs incredibly care various wildlife species. There are multi-colored ponds like sinkholes with exclusive species that comprise cichlid, Cuatro Cienegas pupfish and living stromatolites. The fossil marine stromatolites are first proof of life on Earth.
- Coahuila situated in Northern Mexico has its distinctive marine and terrestrial habitats. You can see several species of turtles, fish, snails and cacti.
- Hol Box, Mexico is famous for its neon pink flamingos, brilliant toucans, howler monkeys and strange sea turtles. There are three eco-parks of Xcaret, Xel-Ha and Tres Rios at a short distance from resorts at Playa del Carmen, Cancun and Tulum, the Riveira Maya.
- Xcaret is quite developed. It has a walk-through pavilion. One can go to the Caribbean sea to swim along with dolphins and manatee. Xel-Ha is located around a massive lagoon where the spring water mixes with the saltwater. There are electric-colored fish. You can also swim with the dolphins. Many local people like Tres Rios, but it is not developed much.
The Yucatan Peninsula has several admirable Mexico wildlife places. Yucatan is famous for warbler species, vireos, Wood Thrushes and Least Flycatchers Thrushes. Several national parks and other protected areas that offer chance to watch wildlife. Blue herons, anteaters, the giant iguanas, ocelots, manatees, ocelots are found in this region.
Merida is in the northwest part of the Yucatan Peninsula. It has the best spots for watching flamingo at Celestin and Rio Legatos. You can see thousands of flamingos socializing, feeding or mating.
On a trip to Baja you may camp on remote islands in the Sea of Cortez as well as Pacific oceans and watch the sea turtles and whales.
Official Parks and Reserves of Mexico:
- Bunco Chinchorro Biosphere Reserve provides wonderful opportunities for viewing marine life.
- Calomel Biosphere Reserve is one of the largest reserves with good tropical forest habitat and a healthy Jaguar population.
- Celestun - Ria Celestun Biosphere Reserve has flamingos and a lot of birds and other wildlife.
- Isla Contoy islands special appeal is nesting seabirds like the Frigate birds and marine life.
- Ria Lagartos Biosphere Reserve is also another important coastal reserve with good bird life, especially flamingos.
- Sian Kaan is one of the largest undisturbed wilderness areas in the Yucatan. It still contains a large variety of the wildlife species found in the peninsula.
- Uxmal Kamal is very thrilling site for seeing marine life. You can see Green Turtles feeding on the sea grass just on side of the beach.
- Chichen Itza: There are many varieties of birds around the great Mayan ruins and beautiful scenery.
- The Punta Laguna Nature Reserve is located near Coba Town and is well known for its Spider Monkeys. You can see Morelet's crocodiles and enjoy exiting birdlife.
- A number of endemic species of wildlife inhabits Cozumel Island. There is great marine life. You can see many birds in the forest area around the ruins.
